Is the UNIO device safe to use?

The UNIO device is a non-invasive treatment. It is safe and effective when used as prescribed by your doctor or another medical professional for its intended use.1

When should I start UNIO treatment?

UNIO treatment can be started any time after a fracture under the direction of your doctor or another healthcare professional. Studies show that low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) treatment is effective for fresh fractures, delayed union fractures (those that take longer than usual to heal) or non-union fractures (those that fail to heal) – so the sooner you start your treatment, the better the healing results.4-7

Can I use the UNIO device if I have a cast, pin, or plate?

The UNIO device can be used in the presence of metal screws and plates.1 For patients who will use UNIO with their cast, a window is required to be cut into the cast by a medical professional. This is necessary so that the transducer (part of the device that transfers the ultrasound waves to the skin) can be placed directly on the skin. Detailed instructions on how to use the UNIO device with a cast can be found in the UNIO User Guide.1

Are there any side effects of using the UNIO device?

A small number of individuals may experience an allergic reaction to the ultrasound gel, mild swelling, muscle cramping, and mild redness of the skin. If any of these occur, stop the use of the UNIO device and speak to your doctor or healthcare provider.1

There are no known contraindications to the use of the UNIO device.1

Can I do more than 20 minutes of treatment per day?

The UNIO device is intended for only one 20-minute treatment per day.1

How long do I need to use the UNIO device?

The UNIO device should be used for 20 minutes each day. Speak to your doctor or medical professional about the overall length of treatment that is required.1

Does insurance cover the UNIO device?

UNIO is covered by most private insurance companies in Canada. Contact your UNIO service provider for more information on insurance coverage, claims, and eligibility.
